Henry's Restaurant
Corner of Henry St & Pacific St., Cobble Hill, Brooklyn
For those who enjoy back-of-house cooking, and who desire better than roach-coach fare, Henry's Restaurant in Cobble Hill is for you. Nestled in between luxurious brownstones lie the perfect working-person's bistro - not always great, but always cheap. Neither pretty nor consistent, the cousin of Tommy's Joynt (for those with San Francisco knowledge), always fills you up. The lunch prices range from $5-7 plus there are lunch specials including soda. Service is fast, friendly and multicultural; the perfect representation of the Cobble Hill/Corral Gardens area.
The main draw of Henry's is the vast array of starch-based foods. The meatloaf with mashed-potatoes, with a side of fried plantains, is excellent. But be careful when ordering at the end of a meal cycle - the meatloaf could have been sitting there for the duration of the cycle. An alternative to the meatloaf, but still carrying the starch banner, is the roast beef in a hoagie bun. Nothing else. Yes, this reviewer has just finished this monstrosity of a sandwich, and while it was good, we would not recommend this choice for the faint of stomach, or those with more discerning pallette. Another great-starch substitute, is the Parmesan Chicken meal, with side of sauce and bread. As chicken goes, this was tender and not overcooked - a pure pleasure.
Henry's is the perfect lunch stop. Not to expensive, not to crowded, not to many places to sit. As the clientele ranges from the LI Hospital across the street, to Cobble Hill mothers, to construction workers, everyone is welcome. This is defiantly not top-10 place to take someone on a first date, but for lunch on the fly, it serves its purpose. Just be sure to take a nap after all of the starch.
